O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: Isaiah 48:18
In this scripture, God is saying if you had just done what I asked you to, your peace would be like a river. He wants our peace to be like a river regardless of what the situation is. The hymn, "It Is Well with My Soul was written by Horatio Spafford. This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871 at the age of four, shortly followed by the great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer). Then in 1873, he had planned to travel to Europe with his family, but sent the family ahead. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sailing ship, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived. Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.
It Is Well With My Soul When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Refrain: It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.
There will be many “lots” in your life that you will not choose. Do you think Mr. Spafford chose those lots? That was not something he could change. There will be times when you would choose to go a different way. God wants us to learn how to lean over on him instead of trying to control our situations. He wants us to give it to him. He has it all under control and will work it out at the right time. When the enemy of our soul comes in like a flood to rob your peace, lift up a standard of the Lord. Peace does not have to go out the window. Circumstances don’t take our peace away. Our attitudes take our peace away. God wants there to be something in us that makes us love him above anything else.
A river is strong and the current is swift. God wants our peace to be like a river.
