Liberty – freedom from slavery, captivity or any other form of control, free
Bondage – slavery, subject of some force
Slave – a human being who is owned by and absolutely subject to another. One who is dominated by some influence or habit.
John 8:32-36 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Who ever commits sin is the servant or slave of sin. Man can not free himself from sin. Jesus came to save us from our sins. When Christ makes us free from sin, we are free indeed.
Proverbs 5:22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. Sin is a hard task master.
When God’s people were in Egypt, before Moses lead them out, they were in hard bondage and made their lives better. Exodus 1:11-14.Being in Egypt is a type of sin and bondage—the more the children of Israel wanted to worship God the harder the burdens were put on them. Pharaoh did not want to let them go.
The devil does not want people to be free from sin. He will try to get people who are thinking about salvation, to get real busy about the affairs of this life where they will have no time for God.
Exodus 5:10-14 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw. And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?
We live is a very busy time where people are trying to find pleasure in this life, but it is the devil that is taking up; all their time. They will never be happy, satisfied, contented or have peace with God when their soul is living in sin.
(A song)
Some people think that freedom is to live the way they please.
To follow worldly pleasure and refuse authority
So blinded by rebellion they think it’s liberty
But you’re not liberated till the Saviour sets you free.
Chorus
Liberated, liberated,
Liberated from sin I have been
Freedom reigns in me
Since my soul has been set free
No more in satan’s bondage.
Jesus liberated me.
I John 3:4-10 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
We are either a child of God that does not commit sin. Or we are a child of the devil, and we do sin. there is no such thing as a “sinning Christian”. When we repent and forsake sin, the bondage of sin is broken so we don’t have to sin anymore. Thank God we can be free form sin. God gives us victory over sin.
Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
If we are dead to sin how are we going to continue to live in sin. We do not sin more or less every day.
Romans 6:16-18 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
We choose each day who we will serve. If we yield our members to sin. Then we are the servants of sin and in bondage to sin. If we yield ourselves to God and his word, we are free from sin.
Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
We are to stand fast in the liberty which Christ has made us free. Free from sin and have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. A lot of people are promising liberty but are living in sins and are in bondage themselves. God delivers us from the pollutions of the world.
II Peter 2:19-22 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
Being made free from sin we become servants to God and have our fruit into holiness. We are free to serve God the bible way and live a holy life.
That’s Gospel Liberty.
