Matthew 6:14-15 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Trespass: Transgression, sin, an offense, a wrong

Our forgiveness from God is hinged on whether we forgive those who sin against us.

Forgive: to give  up resentment against, to give up desire to punish, pardon, to overlook an offense, to cancel a debt.

Jesus gives us instructions on what to do if we get offended at someone.

Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

If you are offended at someone Jesus said go and tell him hihs fault just between you and the other person with th e desire to gain thy brother.

Jesus did not say when you get offended to tell your best friend, or neighbor, or anyone else. He said go to your brother that offended you. Don’t let bitterness, strife, contention, anger, wrath, prompt you to go because you won’t win your brother with those attitudes.

Peter asked Jesus, How often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him?

490 times in one day – Complete Forgiveness.  Matthew 18:21-22

In Matthew 18:23-35:    Jesus gave a story of a King which took account of his servants, One was brought to him which owed the king 10,000 talents. He didn’t have anything to pay the king. The king said, sell his wife and children, and all that he had and pay him. The servant fell down and asked for patience and she would bay the king all. The king was moved was moved with compassion and forgave all his debt.

The same servant went out and found some one who owed him 100 pence. He laid hands on him and took him by the throat and said pay me what you owe me. His fellow servant fell down and asked for patience and he would pay all. But he wouldn’t listen to him. He cast him in prison until the debt was paid.

When the fellow servants saw what was done, they sent to the lord or king and told all that was done. The lord called the servant which had done this and said I forgave all your debt, 10,000 talents, should you not have compassion on your fellow servant which owed you 100 pence like I had on you.

The lord was angry and delivered him to the tormentors until he could pay all.

So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Matthew 18:35

Jesus forgave us our huge debt of sin. He is asking us to forgive our brother what small sin, he sins against us. If we have bitterness, resentment, grudges, anger, strife, contention, etc. in our hearts toward a brother, we do not have forgiveness there.

God requests us to forgive our brother just as he forgave us.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Pride causes contention and strife and bad manners.

Proverbs 13:10  Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Proverbs 28:25  He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

God wants nothing to be done through strife – We have to humble ourselves like Jesus and become obedient unto death.

Philippians  2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
