God requires godly fear in serving him acceptably.
Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
We need to fear God before we can walk in all his ways and love him with all our heart.
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Definition - Godly fear: awe, reverence, attitude of deep respect; to bow, to have intense love and admiration
God fear will cause us to hate what God hates.
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
We are to hate all evil. The one mentioned is pride ( and over high opinion of oneself); haughtiness; (showing great pride in oneself and disdain or contempt for others); and arrogance ( full of pride, brag or boasting about oneself.) If we see pride in ourselves, we need to hate it and humble ourselves. If we have no godly fear; we will refuse instruction.
Proverbs 15:31-33 The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
When we refuse correction or instruction, the Bible says we despise our own soul. The fear of God is the instruction of wisdom.
What is our attitude toward reproof, correction or instruction?
The ear that heareth and accept reproof will be wise. Don’t refuse instruction. Be willing to be taught what ever God wants and then obey.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
